Lightning Splits the World

Halfway home on a 14-hour drive and I headed straight into an enormous lightning storm. Lightning cracking the sky over and over and over again right in front of our eyes, those of us driving East on 74 in Illinois. Hunkering down here in a roadside motel I’m thinking it might be perfectly symbolic. The world is loudly rumbling out there as I type, something feels split wide open, a C-section from the belly of the whale.
